The Death of American Idol?

Simon Cowell is leaving American Idol after the ninth season. Good news or bad news?

Might be good news for those who hated his sharp tongue but what is Idol without him? Shari Anne Brill of Carat USA said in an interview:

“I think it’s that brand of sarcasm combined with professional know-how that makes Simon the audience magnet that he is… I really believe the show revolves around him. He’s the linchpin of the show’s success. He has tremendous influence on how the audience votes. He’s interesting to listen to. He’s brutally honest.” (more…)

Avatar Just Passed the Billion Dollar Mark

I’ve tried to get into Mall of Asia’s IMAX theater to watch Avatar in 3D but the bold, nasty S-O-L-D-  O-U-T-  letters flashing on the screen in front of the ticket booth prevented me from seeing the most talked about New Year movie. And so for now I could just content myself with the staggering news that the James Cameron movie just made a whopping $1.02 billion worldwide.

According to reports (what else could I do but read the reports?), Avatar is now the fourth highest grossing picture worldwide, leap-frogging the spot previously held by The Dark Knight. In a matter of days, it is expected to surpass Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, and maybe even James Cameron’s very own Titanic.

Fantastic, if I only knew what these people are talking about!

EDIT: I watched it last night in IMAX and I was completely blown away. Avatar is one of the best movies of all time!

Mininova IS (sort of) Dead

mininova

November 26 is a sad day for the Bittorent community. After more than four months of court proceedings in a Dutch court and trying a new filtering system to make the site legally compliant, Mininova site owners finally agreed to remove all their links to copyrighted materials. If you happened to visit their site lately, you’ll see a banner on top of the page announcing that only Content Distribution torrents are now allowed in the site. In other words, the site is sort of dead as of Nov. 26.

The “closing down” of Mininova to user uploaded material is another victory for anti-piracy outfits. However, I doubt that the global Bittorrent community will be stopped anytime soon. pizzatorrentWhile Mininova is down this time, there are still dozens of sites out there that offer similar services to torrent users. My guess is that it will just be a matter of time before another torrent indexing site will rise and take over the gaping hole Mininova has now left in the Bittorent community worldwide. It might be a little disorienting for some but the change will be temporary. Soon, another torrent site will rise to prominence and be the target of another anti-piracy organization and this vicious cycle of cracking down errant websites will be repeated over again.

The “sort of closing down” of Mininova is the second most successful crackdown this year. A few months back, Pizzatorrent, one of the largest torrent meta search engines there is, closed down for good. The site that used to house other major indexing sites simply announced that the site is now dead. TorrentFreak reported that the site owner didn’t really receive any legal threats but admitted that there were other forms of attacks.

Werewolves Trampled the Dark Knight

http://images2.fanpop.com/images/photos/4900000/new-moon-new-moon-movie-4909367-510-755.jpgNow this vampire thing finally got me interested. According to reports, the Twilight Saga: New Moon just raked in a whopping $72.7 million on its first day of release, surpassing the record previously held by the Dark Knight’s $67 million opening back in July of 2008. Compared to its prequel, New Moon clocked $3 million more than the gross of Twilight in its first week in cinemas!

MSNBC reported that in midnight screenings alone, New Moon already registered more than $26 million, making it number 1 on the all-time list of top box office grosses for that segment in domestic markets. This is notably higher than Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince which made $22.2 million in midnight screenings in July this year.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon is based on Stephenie Meyer’s book of the same title. It continues the story of Bella (Kristen Stewart), a high school girl who has fallen in love with a vampire (Robert Pattinson) in the first part of the book, the Twilight. In New Moon,  the story focuses on the love triangle between Bella, her vampire lover  Edward Cullen and Jacob Black, the werewolf.

The movie opened in Philippine cinemas last Friday, November 20.
