How to “Steal” Other People’s Color Combination

Or maybe borrow, or get inspiration from, if stealing colors offends you.

The point is that in designing websites or customizing Wordpress themes, most people are stalled when it comes to choosing colors. In my previous post, I mentioned Hex Color Code Generator but that tool is useful only when you already have an idea on what colors to use and you simply needed the codes. But what if you’re still figuring out what colors to use?

Think of it this way: you were browsing the web and you found this one site that you really like. You did a little digging and you found out it’s a paid Wordpress theme but you don’t have the budget to buy that theme for yourself. What do you do? Aside from saving enough money to buy a professional theme, there is one trick you can resort to.

This is where your Adobe Photoshop Eye Dropper Tool comes into play. The eye dropper tool is usually found on the left sidebar of the Photoshop page, along with other editing tools. What you need to do is very simple. Take a screen shot of the website you want to “get inspiration from,” save it using the Paint program in your PC and open the file in Photoshop.

Once in Photoshop, choose Eye Dropper Tool and click the color in the screen shot that you want to copy. Notice how the foreground color swatch, located below your tool bar, changes colors exactly the same as the color you clicked using the eye dropper tool.

Click the foreground swatch and the color picker window will open. Below the window you will see the HTML value of the color you clicked a while ago. You can now edit the CSS of your Wordpress theme and get the exact same color of the website you like.
