Michael Jackson versus Twitter

http://www.boycevoice.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/michael-jackson1.jpgI just got this from Mashable a few minutes ago. Do you know what’s the Top English Word in 2009? No it’s not Vampire. According to Global Language Monitor, TWITTER is the number one word this year, followed by Obama, H1N1, Stimulus, and yes, Vampire.

“In a year dominated by world-shaking political events, a pandemic, the after effects of a financial tsunami and the death of a revered pop icon, the word Twitter stands above all the other words.  Twitter represents a new form of social interaction, where all communication is reduced to 140 characters,” said Paul JJ Payack, President of The Global Language Monitor.

GLM’s list is also echoed by Bing (Microsoft’s decision engine, in case you haven’t heard) which also released their top trending topics this year. Coming on top of the list is Michael Jackson, followed by Twitter, Swine Flu, Stock Market, and Farrah Fawcett. In celebrity searches, Hollywood’s Most Hated Website Owner Perez Hilton is number one, followed by vampire heart throb Robert Pattinson and Transformers star Megan Fox.

Other notable keywords include Deficit, Bonus, Foreclosure, Unemployed, Cloud Computing (Google), Jai Ho (movie Slumdog Millionaire), Mayan Calendar (movie 2012) and God Particle (movie Angels and Demons).

In my previous post, I mentioned that UNFRIEND has just been “canonized” by the New Oxford American Dictionary as an official word in the English language. Now Twitter is the word of the year. I wonder what that means for the future of social media.

Michael Jackson is truly the King of Pop. He made a lot of great songs in the area of Pop Music. His death is a great loss to the music industry.
